Anglais pour enfants

A first English course for French-speaking children of six to ten, in 18 lessons, spoken before it is read.

Ce cours n’est pas proposé actuellement : il ne peut pas être acheté, et aucun espace commercial ne le présente. Cette fiche décrit le cours tel qu’il a été conçu.

Description

A six-year-old barely reads in French, so this course does not start with English text. The first three modules are entirely spoken: an adult reads the instructions, the child listens and answers.

Module 4 is where the course turns, introducing the reading of English words. A six-year-old will reach it later, or do it with an adult, and the course says so — that is not falling behind, and the architecture states it explicitly so that nobody treats it as one.

What the child learns is the English of their own life: greeting people and introducing themselves, saying their name and age and talking about their family, counting to twenty, naming colours, everyday objects and familiar animals, and saying what they like and do not like.

It also teaches the sounds French does not have — th, and the aspirated h — because a child who never hears them named will substitute the nearest French sound for years.

Sessions are fifteen to twenty minutes. A language is learned by frequency, not by duration.

An adult must be present for the first three modules, and is useful afterwards.

Pour qui

French-speaking children of six to ten years old, with an accompanying adult.

The band is wide and the course is built for that: modules 1 to 3 are oral for the youngest; modules 4 and 5 introduce reading for those who read French fluently.

Le problème traité

English courses for children usually assume a reader. A six-year-old who does not yet read French is excluded from them, and the material that does reach them is often a list of words with no way to hear them.

This course starts spoken, and introduces reading only when the child is ready for it.

Le résultat

The child greets, introduces themselves and takes their leave in English; says their name and age and talks about their family; counts to twenty; names colours, common objects and familiar animals; says what they like and dislike; produces the English sounds French lacks, in particular th and the aspirated h; reads short frequent English words aloud; asks three simple questions and answers them; and builds a correct sentence of three to five words.
