Computers for Kids
A first computing course for children of eight to twelve, in 16 lessons, naming no brand and requiring no particular software.
Description
This course teaches a child to use a computer — to understand the machine, organise their work, make something with it, stay safe online, and grasp how instructions are given to a machine.
It names no vendor, no operating system and no application. The lessons speak of the file explorer, a word processor, a browser, so that the course is true whatever the family actually owns. A child who learns here is not learning one company's product.
The learner reads, so the lessons address the child directly. An adult is needed for access and for safety, not to mediate every sentence.
It is deliberately not a simplified version of the adult office course. That course teaches Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook by name to working adults. This one is about understanding a machine, and the boundary is maintained on purpose.
Sixteen lessons across five modules, ending with one final activity that draws on what the course covered.
Who it is for
Children of eight to twelve years old, with an adult available for access and safety.
The learner reads. No prior computing knowledge is assumed.
The problem addressed
Children are handed devices and are taught nothing about them. What they pick up is how to operate one particular app, not how a machine is organised, where their work goes, or why some things online are not safe.
The course gives the underlying picture, in a form a child of that age can use, and without tying it to software the family may not have.
The outcome
The child understands what the machine is and how it is organised, keeps their own work in order, produces something with it, recognises and avoids common online risks, and understands in outline how a machine is given instructions.
What is included
The answer key is in the adult document and on no child page. Verified mechanically by the course QA tool.
