Learning to Colour

A first colouring course for children of five and under, in 12 short lessons, written for the adult who sits with them.

Description

A child of five does not read, so this course is written for the adult beside them. That is a property of the material, not a matter of tone: every lesson tells the accompanying adult what to say, what to look for, and — often the useful part — what not to correct.

The course teaches three things in an order that cannot be reversed. First the gesture: holding the pencil, pressing hard and softly, filling a large shape without leaving gaps. Then the outline: finding the edge, stopping at it, handling corners and points. Only then colour as a choice: naming eight colours, choosing one on purpose rather than at random, and getting light and dark from a single pencil by varying pressure.

A child who cannot yet control the gesture cannot respect an outline. Starting with the outline produces failure, not learning, and the course is built so that does not happen.

Twelve lessons, ten to fifteen minutes each. There is no test. Completion is having done the twelve lessons.

The course includes its own printable colouring sheets, so nothing has to be found elsewhere.

Who it is for

Children of five years old and under, and the adult who accompanies them.

The learner does not read. The material is addressed to the accompanying adult.

The problem addressed

A small child handed a colouring sheet and told to stay inside the lines is often being asked for something their hand cannot yet do. The adult reads it as inattention, the child reads it as failure, and both conclude something untrue.

The course separates motor maturity from lack of effort, and gives the adult the order in which these skills actually arrive.

The outcome

The child holds a pencil stably, fills a surface without unintended gaps, stays inside a broad outline, names and recognises eight colours, chooses a colour deliberately, varies pressure to get light and dark from one pencil, and finishes a colouring they have started.
